How we loved

How we loved

is by the light of invisible candles and in smiles
coming unbidden mirrored in the backs of spoons
by smoothing the bedcover and not pulling at the tufts
even though we wanted to so very much
by noticing a wren had fallen into a tulip
and being shattered by its tiny death
by allowing the cat to pretend to cry
and kissing father even though he disliked it
as though we were castor oil and good for him
by one day finding he kept every single card
we ever sent him, and that is all he kept
apart from a German primer

and a faded photo in a jam jar.
