Water Babies

I want to start again at the beginning
Without the pile-ups and soot, the vaporous malingering
Doubts, fragile receptacle unbroken,
The powdery  stamen still on the flower
How is an explanation possible
With everyday Atlantean slippage?

Tom with his smuts was washed clean
That is all he wanted in this life
But he got other lessons in propriety and conduct
His slatey selkie skin fell away
Leaving him exposed to whales
Nibbling fish  and the worry of chimneys
Once climbed.
